Korea showed its supremacy in the Olympic sport of taekwondo as it clinched two gold medals and one silver medal on the fourth day of the 2009 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on Oct. 17, 2009.
Turkey grabbed one gold and one bronze medal, while China won one gold medal.
In the men’s -54kg final match, Korea’s Yeon-ho Choi brushed aside a stiff challenge from Afghanistan’s Mahmood Haidari to won the gold medal. The victory made Choi a four-time world champion in taekwondo.
The bronze in the male category went to Iran’s Meisam Bagheri and Thailand’s Chutchawal Khawlaor.
In the women’s -46kg division, Korea’s Hyo-ji Park outpointed Puerto Rico’s Zoraida Santiago to earn her country the gold medal.
Thailand’s Buttree Puedpong and Canada’s Yong Yvette shared the bronze medal in the female category.
In the women’s -73kg division, China’s Ying Ying Hang defeated Korea’s In-jong Lee to win the gold medal. The bronze was shared by Turkey’s Furkan Aydin and Russia’s Anastasia Baryshnikova.
Turkey’s Bahri Tanrikulu earned his country the gold medal as he crushed Italy’s Cario Molfetta in the men’s -87kg final match.
The bronze went to Serbia’s Vanja Babic and Iran’s Yousef Karami.
The 2009 World Taekwondo Championships, which takes place at the Ballerup Super Arena near Copenhagen, drew a total of 928 athletes, including 558 men, from 142 countries, the largest ever in WTF Championships history.
Electronic body protectors and an instant video replay system are being introduced at the ongoing World Championships, which continues until Oct. 18.
